To ensure the success of your campaign, it is important to define where you want your ads to appear, but it is equally important to specify where they should not appear. Thanks to the geographical locations to be excluded, you prevent your ads from appearing in certain parts of your targeted areas (eg, in a specific region of a country or in a particular city or region). This allows you to use your budget wisely avoiding your ad being displayed to customers who could not possibly benefit from your products or services.

Who has an interest in excluding places of AdWords targeted areas?

  • A company that does not deliver its products or provide its services in a city or a specific region of a geographic area.
  • A company offering a special promotion in some regions but some speficic areas are not eligible.


Imagine that you deliver pizzas in Switzerland. If you can’t deliver in Geneva, you can target Switzerland, but specifically exclude Geneva.

How to exclude specific places?

Simply enter the name of the place to be excluded.

To exclude certain areas selected areas, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your AdWords account at
  2. Click the Campaigns tab.
  3. Click the name of the campaign to change its settings.
  4. Click the Settings tab.
  5. Click Edit next to “Locations”.

    • Enter the location you want to exclude in the search field, then click Exclude.

  7. Click Save to save your settings. Excluded locations appear under “Location excluded.”

If you select “Show places on the map,” geographic areas that are excluded are circled in red on the map.

How to exclude locations in bulk?

If you want to exclude several geographic areas simultaneously in AdWords, you can add up to 1000 zones to exclude at once, instead of adding each zone one by one.

To exclude several places selected areas, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your AdWords account at
  2. Click the Campaigns tab.
  3. Click the name of the campaign to change.
  4. Click the Settings tab.
  5. In the section “Languages ​​and geographies,” click Edit next to “Locations”, then click Advanced Search.

  7. In the field, paste or type the name of 1000 zones (maximum) that you want to exclude. Be sure to add areas of one country at a time.

  8. Select the country code for a set of geographic areas.

  9. After entering the area of your choice, then click Search.

  10. All geographic areas that match your search appear in the panel. Check the results, then click Exclude all corresponding regions. The areas you just exclude will appear in the “List of Locations”.

  11. Click OK.
  12. To apply the changes, click Save in the “Settings” tab.

Tips and Hints

Remember that the Delete option deletes all corresponding locations in all regions of the panel, as well as your targeted areas or geographic exclusions.
